These systems provide a lot more information than the simple evaluation of potential interactions, including information on administration and dosage in patients with impaired liver or kidney function, administration of incompatible medications via catheter, application, ingredients that can be ground using mortar and pestle, medicinal products that may be administered via feeding tubes as well as information on administration in elderly patients.

One guiding principle for medical care of patients in hospital is the reliable provision of medical consumables. During the whole process of manufacturing pharmaceutical products for provisioning the Bundeswehr knowledge and implementation of good manufacturing practices (GMP) are essential conditions. In the center of the consulting activities terms such as compliance, adherence, medication plan, drug interactions or antibiotic stewardship are often found to ensure medication safety through therapy management. The common goal of all work is that the right patient receives the right drug, in the right form, in the right dosage, and at the right time. In the Bundeswehr Hospital Ulm, these services are combined under one roof in the hospital pharmacy. Now I would like to come full circle, and return to the digression at the beginning of my article. In the pharmacy of the Bundeswehr Hospital Ulm, you can find the full variety of pharmaceutical duties. Manufacturing and supply as well as the different aspects of expert pharmaceutical services and commercial components constitute genuine pharmaceutical core capabilities. This is why I would like to encourage the readers of this article to embrace and use these capabilities whenever the opportunity arises. Whether the pharmacists in Ulm are facing a challenge or a contradiction is certainly a controversial question. The strict organizational separation between manufacturing on an industrial scale and pharmacy duties is definitely an option, and has been contemplated since there are significant differences in the tasks and objectives of both fields. But the boundaries between the two fields are fluid. Therefore the combination of hospital pharmacy and the manufacturing of medicinal products can also generate financial synergies. From my point of view, however, a combination of these tasks makes the daily work routine more interesting. The profound knowledge of quality assurance aspects in accordance with EU GMP Guidelines is also an advantage in the individual and bulk preparation of pharmaceutical formulations, and ready-to-use cytostatic drugs. Being so close to the Bundeswehr Hospital provides a bridge to applied pharmacy, and ensures that this profession is practiced at the cutting edge of pharmaceutical science in a dynamic environment. Regarding all these facts the task of the pharmacists in Ulm is more a challenge than a contradiction.
